Research Interests

Primary areas of interest in atmospheric science include aviation meteorology and the impact of weather on aviation operations, synoptic- scale dynamics and energetics, and the interactions between synoptic- and mesoscale motion fields.

Teaching Interests

Professor of Aviation Technology and Head of the Department of Aviation Technology at Purdue University, where he has taught since 1972. Over 39 years of experience as a pilot, with more than 10,270 flight hours. Holds the Airline Transport Pilot certificate with multiengine, Mitsubishi Diamond, and Beechjet type ratings, in addition to the Certified Flight Instructor certificate with airplane single- and multiengine, and instrument airplane ratings. Currently flies as pilot-in-command and instructor pilot on Purdue's Beechcraft King Air (B200) and Beechjet (400A) aircraft. Primary teaching areas in aviation include advanced aviation meteorology, high performance turbine operations, high altitude flight, and corporate flight department management. Dr. Carney served for 9 years as the senior editor of the Collegiate Aviation Review, and is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education and Research and the Journal of Air Transportation. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI), as AABI vice president, and is the chairman of the Certified Aviation Manager Governing Board (CAMGB). Dr. Carney is an active consultant in corporate flight operations and expert witness in litigation involving flight operations and aviation meteorology. In 2004, he was designated a Certified Aviation Manager by the CAMGB.

Awards and Honors

• Presented with the President's Award by the University Aviation Association, for long-term leadership and service, October 2006

• Awarded NBAA Pilot Flying Safety Award (5500 hours), 2005

• Selected as "Member of the Year" by the Council on Aviation Accreditation, July 2004.

• Recipient of the 2003 Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department at Purdue.

• Awarded the University Aviation Association (UAA) William A. Wheatley Award, that organization's most renowned award, September 2002. The Wheatley Award honors a pioneer in aviation education, and is presented annually to a professional educator of more than 10 years' experience, who has made outstanding contributions to aerospace education.

• Election to Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, and Gamma Sigma Delta Honoraries.

• Appointed an Accident Prevention (now Aviation Safety) Counselor by the Indianapolis FAA General Aviation District Office, 1980-present.

• Nominated for Dwyer Award for outstanding teaching by General Aviation Flight Technology students, 1976-77. 

• Nominated for Dwyer Award for outstanding teaching by Aviation Technology students (departmental representative) 1977-78, 1979-80, 1982-83, and 1995-96. 

• Selected as  the fifth annual "Distinguished Guest Lecturer in Residence" by the Institute of Aviation, University of Nebraska at Omaha, March 1995. 

• Winner of the Dwyer Award for outstanding undergraduate teaching in the School of Technology, 1996.

• Selected as a member of the inaugural group of 225 professors included in the Purdue University Book of Great Teachers, 1999.

• Awarded NBAA Pilot Flying Safety Award (4500 hours), 2001.
