Amidst the stunning wilderness of Yellowstone National Park, steam and hot water bubble and hiss from thousands of colorful, mineral-encrusted springs and vents. These hot springs, geysers and bubbling mud pools are all outward manifestations of a huge body of magma residing not far beneath the surface. It's a subterranean sea of molten lava that scientists are sure will burst through the Earth's crust – it's just a question of when. And if the resulting super-volcanic eruption is anything like the last one on Earth – which plunged the world into darkness for six years, tipped us into the last Ice Age and reduced the human population to just 2,000 people – we're in for one explosive ride. Based on the predictions of top volcano experts and the detailed planning and evacuation strategies of government agencies, this sobering, factual drama shapes possible events into a compelling human experience. Watch as state-of-the-art computer graphics integrated with mock-factual sources reveal the horrifyingly realistic build-up to the Yellowstone eruption and the climax itself. Learn what effects the eruption may have across the globe – environmentally, politically, economically and socially – as the massive ash cloud drifts into the upper atmosphere. And glimpse the fragmented world that such a cataclysmic geological event would surely leave behind.

Former Vice President Al Gore presents an eye-opening and compelling view of the future of our planet- and our civilization- in the MUST-SEE documentary of the year. This is a wake-up call that cuts through myths and misconceptions to deliver the message that global warming is a real and present danger. An Inconvenient Truth brings home Gore’s persuasive argument that we must act now to save the earth. Each and every one of us can make changes in the way in which we live our lives and BECOME PART OF THE SOLUTION.

Deadly flooding in Africa. Catastrophic hurricanes in the U.S. Record-high temperatures worldwide. Are these natural, temporary glitches in our global climate, or is the devastation the result of global warming? The weather is different now- but why? Find out when NOVA and FRONTLINE join forces to determine What’s Up with the Weather? Man-made carbon dioxide has overloaded the earth’s atmosphere. With demand for fossil fuels increasing daily, experts predict emission levels will triple in the next 100 years. But the greenhouse effect remains the subject of heated debate among scientists, climatologists, and futurists. Some believe the earth’s temperature will rise nearly 10 degrees, melting arctic ice caps and, paradoxically, bringing about a new Ice Age. Others believe the weather will stay relatively normal. Who’s right? Decide for yourself as the riveting two-hour special gives you the fascinating-and occasionally frightening- forecast for the future.

Geology is Geologic Disaster, the Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Floods and Landslides that are way beyond the power of humans to control. Geology is Geologic Resources, the Minerals, Fossil Fuels, Water, and Environment that are the foundation of our civilization. Geology- Why Bother? is an excellent, non-technical exploration of geology in our daily lives. The best geologic disaster photography, special effects, and upbeat pacing will captivate viewers. Prominent geologists- including Bob Tilling, Randy Updike, Christine Turner, Ken Kolm, Pete Palmer, Melody Holm, Don Gautier and the Subaru Distinguished Earth Science Educators- explain geology and “Why Geology is Cool.” Viewers will now understand Geology- Why Bother.

In the fall of 2006, Andrill drilled and recovered 1,284 meters of rock core from beneath the McMurdo Ice Shelf in Antarctica. What secrets are hidden in this rock? Why do scientists from around the world work together in the coldest, windiest, driest place on Earth to uncover these secrets that have been shrouded beneath the ice for millions of years? Join us for real world geoscience adventure in Antarctica! The 14-video journals on this DVD were produced live from the ice during the Andrill McMurdo Ice Shelf Project (October 2006-January 2007). The accompanying booklet contains background information, discussion starters, and hands-on activities to engage you and your students, and others in learning Antarctic geoscience.
