RESEARCH
Coalbed Methane Formation in western India

As a collaborative project between Purdue University and the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmadabad, India, we will be analyzing the isotopes of carbon and hydrogen in coal bed methane gas in order to determine how it was formed. Thermogenic methane and biogenic methane have unique isotopic signature, which can yield information as to the methane's potential yield. Research will be conducted at the PSI lab with Professor SK. Bhattacharya form PRL who will be visiting Purdue in 2008.

Dual isotope plot of δ13C and δD values of coal methane from numerous studies showing distinct covariance of individual sources (from Whiticar 1999).

We will be analyzing coal bed methane from tertiary coal deposits in the Rajasthan District of northwestern India.
