How do I add a printer to my Linux?

All network printers are broadcast to Linux boxes by the print server on hypocenter. As a result, all departmental printers are available. You can choose which printer to print to either in your application or by setting the PRINTER environment variable. For example, if you wanted to set your default printer to the HP LaserJet 8100 in CIVL 2169M you would use the following command:

    (in the CSH shell)

    setenv PRINTER civl2169mlbw1

    (in the Bash shell)

    export PRINTER=civl2169mlbw1

Please note that you will have to do this each time unless you add the command to your .cshrc or .bashrc file. If you would like to have the default printer for a particular machine set (for example, if you want the computers in your lab to default to your lab printer), please send an e-mail to eas-help@purdue.edu.

How do I print from Linux?
    • To print a single job to a specific printer:
      lpr -P printername filename
    • To view the printer queue for a printer
      lpq -P printername
    • To cancel an existing print job
      lprm -P printername job_id

(get the job from the lpq listing)
