Creation:

The account policy on hypocenter provides for automatic account creation for faculty, staff, graduate students, and others identified as affiliated with EAS in their Purdue Electronic Directory entry. Undergraduate students, working for EAS, may have an account created on hypocenter when requested by an EAS faculty member.

Disabled Account:

Accounts are disabled after an individual's entry is removed from the Student Services or Human Resource Services data file. If your account is scheduled to be disabled, a warning notification will be received when you login to hypocenter. Once your account is disabled, you will be unable to login and access files stored on your hypocenter account.

Removal:

Accounts are completely removed from hypocenter when an individual's entry no longer appears in the Purdue Electronic Directory. For students, this occurs approximately three semesters after graduation. For departing/retiring staff and faculty, this occurs after their entry is removed from Human Resources data and the Purdue Electronic Directory deletion cycle has occurred. (Directory deletions are scheduled during October Break and Spring Break.)

Data Assistance when leaving Purdue:

If you are leaving Purdue University, and need assistance with transferring your data from hypocenter, please contact the EAS Technology Support Staff by sending email to eas-help@purdue.edu.

Backup schedule:

An incremental backup is performed on hypocenter every night. This means that any file which has changed since the previous backup will be copied to tape. Files are kept for 14 days or 14 copies, whichever is shorter. As long as a file has not been deleted, there will always be at least one copy on the backup tapes. Files that are deleted will be removed from tape no later than 14 days after they are deleted.

File recovery:

The EAS IT staff can perform file recovery for you. To initiate a file recovery, please send an e-mail to eas-help@purdue.edu. Please include the full file path (e.g. /project/hypocenter/group/eascomp/somefile.txt) and the date and time you need it recovered from.

From a PC running Windows:

1. Right click the Start menu.

2. Click Explore.

3. On the Tools menu, click Map Network Drive.

4. In Drive, select a drive letter.

5. In Folder, type

\\hypocenter.eas.purdue.edu\

and click "Browse."

6. Browse to the desired directory. The table below gives detail about the different directories.

7. When prompted, enter your Purdue Career Account login and password

If you are running Windows XP/2000/NT, you may need to use the option on the Map Network Drive window Connect using different user name and enter your Purdue Career Account login and password. With Windows 98, your local User name must match your Purdue Career Account login.

From a Mac:

From Mac OS X 10.1 or higher
In the Finder, click on the Go menu
Select "Connect to Server"

In the "Server Address:" field enter

smb://hypocenter.eas.purdue.edu/{desired share}

See the table above in the Windows directions for directory details.

Click the "+" button on the right side of the field to add this address to your favorites.

Leave the "WorkGroup or Domain" field at the default setting
Enter your Purdue career account login for "Name" and your Purdue career account password for "Password"

Important: In order to connect to your home directory from off campus that is NOT connected via ResNet, you must first connect to the VPN service.

From a PC running Windows:

1. Right click the Start menu.

DXUL is a long-term storage archive that may be used by all faculty.
DXUL stores data on tape, so it is highly recommended that you
compress the files you wish to archive into a single, larger archive
file. (Transferring lots of little files will waste disk space and
create a lot of overhead on DXUL.) You may use zip, tar, bz2 or any
other compression utility.

For example, assume the files you wish to archive are located in the
directory "data2005", you may compress them by running:

         tar -cvzf data2005.tar.gz data2005

If the system complains about not knowing what -z is, then you will need to use two steps:

         tar -cvf data2005.tar data2005
         gzip data2005

 Now you can move the compressed file to DXUL.

Graduate Student Exit Information

Purdue Electronic Directory Account
Purdue Electronic directory accounts are based on information received from the Office of the Registrar for students or from Human Resources for faculty and staff.  Old accounts are deleted twice a year. Your directory account will be scheduled for deletion once your information is no longer received. Purdue Electronic Directory deletions occur during Spring and October Breaks.

Mailhub E-mail Account
Mailhub accounts are deleted the same time as Purdue Electronic Directory Accounts.  In the months after leaving Purdue, you should begin the process of moving any mail you wish to keep, and giving your contacts your updated information.  You may wish to change the service field of your directory entry to forward to your new email address.  If you choose, you can create an @alumni.purdue.edu mail address that you may use after graduation.  For more information, visit: https://awc.alumni.purdue.edu/ 

Purdue Career Account
Your Purdue Career Account will remain active as long as you remain affiliated with Purdue University. Since some services are based on your specific affiliation, certain services will be removed immediately.
Students no longer registered and taking courses in a given semester will lose access to the on-campus labs and its related services. This includes Software Remote (formerly DACS) services and their personal web page. This removal process takes place twice a year – at Spring and October breaks. (Accounts for December graduates are deleted during Spring Break and accounts for May and August graduates are deleted during October Break.)

Hypocenter
Data stored in your personal (Z: drive or /eas) space on hypocenter is subject to deletion six (6) months after you graduate.  Speak to your advisor to see if he or she needs any of the data stored there and make arrangements for the data to be transferred to them.  Files you wish to keep should be moved to other storage areas.

Data stored in a group shared space is considered property of the University and will have the file ownership changed to your advisor after you graduate.  In order to conserve disk space, you should speak with your advisor to see if there are unneeded files which may be deleted.
