Outreach

Our group’s research, especially on earthquakes, affords us many education and outreach opportunities. While conducting a GPS survey in Haiti immediately after the 2010 earthquake, which brought us to towns throughout the country, we took many opportunities to discuss the earthquake and future seismic hazards with a broad array of people.

We are currently teaming up with high schools in Haiti and international organization Teachers Without Borders to develop an earthquake curriculum for Haitian high schools. We are planning on holding workshops for teachers in the Port-au-Prince and Mirebalais regions in the coming years.

Following the recent devastating earthquake in Sendai, Japan, where we visited in 2010 to begin a rheology research collaboration, we discussed the causes of the earthquake and tsunami with several local (WFLI) and international (CNN) news organizations.

We have also given a number of talks to a variety community groups, including libraries, high schools, elder hostels, and local councils. We enjoy accommodating requests for talks on any aspect of earthquakes - just ask!
