For our daily operations, we basically work out of two workspaces. Our "clean" lab is equipped with research microscopes and several computers with GIS capabilities. Our other lab is a "mud" lab used for sample preparation, chemical hood operations, and map storage. Other departmental instrumentation that we frequently use are x-ray powder diffractometer, electron microprobe, and mineral separation and rock cutting facilities. SEM and TEM instruments are available to our group through other departments at Purdue University. Additional instrumentation and collaborative research opportunities are available with several other groups at Purdue University. The Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement Laboratory (PRIME Lab) is one of the few facilities in the nation capable of measuring very low concentrations of radionuclides 10Be, 14C, 26Al, 36Cl and 129I using accelerator mass spectrometry. The Stable Isotope Laboratory consists of a gas-source ratio mass spectrometer and several high-vacuum lines for measuring 34S/32S ratios in coals, ores, and rocks; 13C/12C ratios in carbonates and organic matters; and 18O/16O ratios in silicates, oxides, and carbonates. The Biogeochemistry Laboratory has the analytical equipment necessary for measuring the composition and concentration of biomarkers from sediments, particulate, and dissolved organic matter fractions.
